Methodology
How we test orthopedic dog beds.
Most "best dog bed" articles online have never tested any of the beds they recommend. They are scraped from Amazon listings, restated, and reposted. We do it the long way.
The test panel
Beds rotate through three resident test dogs:
- A 92-pound Labrador with mild bilateral hip dysplasia (age 9)
- A 14-year-old German Shepherd mix with spondylosis
- A 105-pound Pyrenees mix recovering from TPLO surgery
Test duration
Every bed gets a minimum of four weeks of continuous use as the primary sleeping surface. Beds claiming long-term durability stay in rotation for six months or longer.
Foam compression
We measure foam thickness at four points (corners and center) on day one, day seven, and at the end of the test period. We additionally apply a 30-pound calibrated weight for one hour and measure recovery time.
Washability
Every cover that claims to be machine-washable is washed at least three times during the test period. We note shrinkage, color fastness, zipper failures, and any change in the way the cover fits the foam core.
Scoring
Each bed receives a score out of 10 weighted across:
- Foam quality — 40%
- Build durability — 25%
- Washability — 15%
- Value (price-to-performance) — 15%
- Warranty — 5%
Conflicts and bias
Beds are purchased at retail when possible. When we accept a manufacturer-supplied unit (often the only option for premium beds with long lead times), it is disclosed in the review and does not influence the score. We do not return units after testing unless required by warranty.
